Breeding Program FAQ
DiversityWhat does that mean?
It means that we pay attention to our bison's bloodlines.
|
|
What are bloodlines?
Genetically different bloodgroups that are different from other bison and not closely related.
|
|
How do you know they are different bloodlines?
One way is if the herd is an isolated herd another is to do blood tests.
Today you can even get a better idea with DNA testing.
|
Top-QualityWhat makes an animal top-quality?
An animal that has no deformities, can breed without complications, and can gain weight
in a variety of conditions.
|
Award WinnersWhat does that mean?
To win an award the animal must be brought to a show and sale to compete against other
people's animals in same class. An animal is then judged and placed 1-3 or 1-5 in the
class.
|
|
What is the top award?
In most shows today the Grand Champion male or female is the highest award an animal
can win. There are only a few animals out there that can claim that distinction.
|
|
How do you compete?
There are many regional shows across the country. The best of best is still the Gold
Trophy show and sale in Denver Colorado. Regional shows are open to everyone.
Entry to the "GTSS" is restricted entry to those who qualify first. A
"GTSS" Trophy harder to obtain.
|
Why compete in bison show and sales?
There is no better way than bringing your animals in and comparing to with everyone else's
top quality animals to know how well you are doing with your breeding program.
Some may say this does not matter, because it is meat that drives the market, but I know
that if you do not pay attention to your breeding stock and have average or below quality
animals that do not gain well, you're wasting your money.
